Insights from the trenches

Posted on Sunday 25 March 2007

I had an epiphany last week. Truly an insight of the deepest nature.

Workplaces with green walls are evil. The two worst working experiences of my life have both involved organisations with green walls. I don’t know what brings an interior designer to decide that green walls are a good idea, but whatever it is, I think it’s motivated by madness.

I’m not sure which way the causality flows. I don’t know whether the green walls make people unhappy, which in turn makes it a horrible working environment, or whether the green walls are a reaction by the designer to the environment. Either way, it’s a giant flag that something’s wrong.

I originally thought this insight was just my own unique experience. However, I have corroboration. I was sharing this theory with it with someone I work with. Believe it or not, one of their worst worst working environments involved … wait for it … working in a place with green decor.

I’m still not entirely sure that I’m right. However, I have three correlating points, and as we all know, three points makes a trend. So there you go.

Stay away from places with green walls.
